IGS staff recent acheivements

Congratulations to Aoife Brady who completed the London Marathon 2016 recently! Aoife was raising money for boNGO, a non-governmental non-profit organisation which works in Malawi educating local children.

Further congratulations go to Kathy Kavanagh who was recently awarded a distinction in studying online for a Certificate in Natural Resources for Sustainable Development through the Colombia Centre in New York.

Congratulations are also due for Sławomir Wójcik (Sławek) who recently presented a paper titled ‘Semantic Approach for Prospectivity Analysis of Mineral Deposits’ at the 2nd International Conference on Geographical Information Systems Theory, Applications and Management – GISTAM 2016 – in Rome, Italy.

IGS presents at MINEX Asia 2016

MINEX Asia Apr 2016 4IGS was pleased to be invited as an expert speaker to the recent MINEX Asia 2016 event held in Astana, Kazakhstan. This forum, which is one of the largest events in central Asia, is a platform to promote mineral exploration and mining in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Mongolia, and attracts key representatives from national governments and industry, amongst others.

Geochemistry training course completed in Sierra Leone

Geochemistry course participantsIGS, together with our partner SRK Exploration, recently presented a week long geochemistry training course at the National Minerals Agency (NMA) in Sierra Leone. The course was designed to familiarise NMA staff with all aspects of geochemistry, especially in relation to mineral exploration and understanding how results can be recorded and interpreted.

IGS is pleased to be in partnership with SRK Exploration for this work and we look forward to continue to develop our relationship with new ventures over the coming months.

IGS exhibits at PDAC 2016

IGS had a strong presence at this years PDAC in Toronto with three IGS staff manning a stand, and a further IGS staff member assisting on the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum stand. This was the first year that IGS exhibited at PDAC, and due to the success of the event we will be renewing our stand next year.

In addition to attending meetings with existing clients, this was another opportunity to promote the launch of our new prospectivity service, IGS Xplore, and we were pleased with the reception this received from everyone we met.

IGS wins project in India

IGS is pleased to announce the awarding of a new contract in India. This work will assist the Geological Survey of India (GSI) manage and compile the Terms of Reference for a forthcoming tender to undertake a multi-sensor airborne geophysical surveying consultancy over India, as well as assisting in the process to identify the winning bidder for this work. The project is funded by the Government of India and is due to start in April 2016.

IGS wins project in Lao PDR

Flag of Lao PDRIGS is pleased to announce the awarding of a new contract in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. This work, funded by the World Bank, is titled “Acquisition and Development of Geodata Infrastructure (Geological Mapping) within selected areas of Lao PDR”. IGS is part of a consortium which includes the Finnish Geological Survey (GTK) and Paterson, Grant and Watson (PGW), a Canadian-based geophysics company. IGS is assisting in the managing of this project and undertaking geological mapping whilst the airborne geophysical data collection component is anticipated to start in April.

Dr Peter Zawada, Managing Director of IGS, stated “IGS is very pleased to have won this contract against stiff competition, which demonstrates our technological expertise and value for money credentials in winning this type of work”.

IGS to exhibit at PDAC 2016

IGS is pleased to announce that we will be exhibiting a stand at PDAC in Toronto from 6-9th March. PDAC is the world’s largest mining event, attracting around 30,000 visitors over its four days.

IGS will exhibit on stand 6730N in the PDAC Trade Show North of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

IGS successfully launches Xplore at Indaba

IGS successfully launched its new software service, IGS Xplore, at the recent Mining Indaba in Cape Town, South Africa. Significant interest came from junior exploration companies, governmental bodies, and other geoscience consultancies, with other discussions occurring between IGS and the World Bank, DFID and other geological surveys.

IGS attends Mining Expo in Oman

DSC02837v2Antony Benham from IGS presented a talk on the ‘The role of geodata in encouraging investment in exploration and mining’ at a recent conference on Oman’s mining industry held in Muscat, Oman.  The talk was well received and was mentioned in an article in The Times of Oman. As well as this invited talk, IGS also attended meetings with the Public Authority for Mining, UKTI and other local companies.

IGS is happy to be associated with the Oman Mining Expo as Oman seeks to diversify from the petroleum sector into the mining sector, and we look forward to working with the Omani Government in the future to help promote Oman’s mining sector.

Visit of Afghan Minister of Mines and Petroleum

His Excellency the Minister of Mines and Petroleum in Afghanistan, Dr. Daud Saba, together with the Deputy Minister of Mines and Petroleum, Javid Sadaat, visited the British Geological Survey’s main offices in Keyworth on Thursday 3rd December for discussions with IGS and BGS and a tour of the site’s laboratories, core store and other facilities.

Both BGS and IGS have a long and successful history of working in Afghanistan, with BGS working there from 2004-2008, and more recently (2014) with IGS starting a new three year project designed to improve capacity and training at the Afghan Geological Survey and Ministry of Mines and Petroleum.

Dr Peter Zawada, Managing Director of IGS Ltd, said “I am really pleased that IGS is involved in working in Afghanistan and that our project there is helping to make a real difference to the Afghan people by training specialists and installing new laboratory capacity. IGS is committed to continuing our relationship with the Afghan Ministry of Mines and Petroleum and we are most grateful to BGS for agreeing that the Minister and Deputy Minister can see the world class laboratory and storage facilities available on the BGS site”.
